Mmmm

Mmmm...Pretzels
We had a pretty eventful weekend. Friday Ed and I decided to try our hand at making some soft pretzels thanks to Alton Brown and Good Eats (one of our favorite shows).
I made Ed shape them while I took the pictures. It's actually much easier to make pretzels than you would think. You make the dough and let it sit for an hour and let the yeast do it's thing. Then you boil it in water that has been laced with baking soda for 30 seconds. Cover in egg wash and salt. We didn't have any pretzel salt, so we just used Kosher, but we will be ordering some. Then you bake, cool and enjoy.I must admit I was surprised when we took them out of the oven and they smelled like pretzels, and even more surprised when they tasted like them!
Here they are in all their pretzel-y glory.

The shaping got easier as we went along.
We also picked blueberries today. We've had a blueberry bush in the backyard for as long as I can remember, but we've never covered it, so the birds always got to the berries before we could. This year...BOY do we have blueberries. And they are tasty :) (The same cannot be said for our gooseberries, but maybe next year.)
I've been doing so-so on the knitting front. I must get back to it right this minute, as I'm on a deadline with my current project, but I'll update tomorrow. Wasn't much knitting time yesterday as the soggy day was spent at Ed's dad's retirement party.
I leave you with a picture...of my cat in a bag...she's just a wee bit strange, but has excellent taste in bags. :)

The pretzels are quite good.

I like the gooseberries when they're still green. I'm not even sure if you can eat them when they're green.

Agnes in the Coach bag = cute. She totally wanted to be put in that bag and get carried around and then get her picture taken. She puts up with so much crap.

I did not know you were an Alton fan. We own a whole whack of dvd's...I adore Alton. But I never heard that kitchen purification thing till Dena mentioned it. Hmmm...

We used to make all our own bread, including bagels. It's easy and VERY fun until you've got three kids who eat them faster than you can churn them out.

We're big fans of Alton in this house. Ella discovered Iron Chef America on Saturday and was excited to see Alton there too.

My favorite tip from one of his books was the kitchen purge where you take everything out of your cupboards and after 60 days whatever you haven't used and put back, chuck it. We got rid of two enormous boxes of kitchen stuff we were never using.

Wow, those look delicious. I've been meaning to try that for awhile but thought it would be a whole mess of work for maybe disappointing results. I'll have to give it a go!
