Longest Day...
Growing up, my Dad always got excited about the longest day of the year...the first day of Summer. He is not a winter person...HATES IT. The first time white precipitation is forecast, he's depressed, and continues that way for the next 6 months or so. At least until he can see grass and take the golf clubs out again (also a cause for depression, but a different kind).
Now, as I get older, I realize that I, like my Dad, Hate Winter. When I was little, it was fun to go play outside (though Anna never wanted to play with me), freeze my bum off, come back in, and go out an hour or so later. Nevermind the pain of getting in and out of snow clothes! Soon (too soon), snow started to hurt because it was too cold stuck in the boot, snowmen seemed like an awful lot of work when they would lose their head the next day, and slipping in slush in front of half the school...not fun (not that I can ever remember this happening, but the prospect certainly was frightening. I did slip on the ice walking on our front sidewalk on the way to school once...the 20 foot hike was challenging...Anna tried to pick me up by my backpack...kind, but added to the mortification).
Then came driving in the snow. I hate it, and will avoid it whenever possible.
Anyway, today, the first day of Summer, is the longest period of daylight, and I, like my Dad, have been looking forward to it. Not because I have a love of the outdoors, or even Summer weather (because I don't like bugs, and I don't like to be too hot), but because daylight makes me happy. Not having to turn my light on until after 7:30 makes me happy. Sitting on the porch and knitting in the evening makes me happy. The thought that Summer has just begun makes me happy, and while we don't have any vacation (with the exception of a day trip or two planned) isn't my ideal way of spending Summer, I look forward to many relaxing evenings knitting and doing next to nothing.
I like Fall too, but I will enjoy the "lazy days of Summer" (at least until it gets too hot!). And with that, the thunderstorm is rolling in....
